Therapeutic Practices (modality)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of mindful psychotherapy that helps you stay focused on the present moment and accept thoughts and feelings without judgment.

It aims to help you move forward through difficult emotions so you can put your energy into healing instead of dwelling on the negative. With the help of a licensed professional, you'll pick up a collection of coping mechanisms specifically designed for your situation, which you can use throughout your life to handle challenging experiences.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Marsha Linehan, a psychologist at the University of Washington, originally developed DBT in the 1980s. Although initially intended to help chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, DBT has since been adapted for and used to effectively treat a number of other psychological problems.

The central dialectic within DBT is to balance acceptance of the person exactly as s/he is in this moment with intense efforts to change the person’s life to increase adaptive functioning and decrease maladaptive behavior. The overarching goal of treatment with DBT is to help individuals develop, as Dr. Linehan would say, “a life worth living.”

Narrative Therapy holds that the problem is the problem, not the person. This approach externalizes issues, helping clients to see that they are not defined by their problems. People make sense of their lives through stories, which are influenced by cultural, social, and personal factors. Therapy explores how dominant narratives may be limiting and seeks to uncover alternative or “preferred” stories.

Therapists work with clients to deconstruct unhelpful narratives and re-author new stories that better reflect their values, hopes, and abilities. Narrative therapy looks for moments when the client has resisted problems or acted in alignment with their values—these are called "unique outcomes" and can become the basis for new narratives. The therapist acts as a collaborator or guide, not an expert who diagnoses or labels. The client is seen as the expert in their own life.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Focus on Solutions, Not Problems, in which the Therapists help clients identify and build on what is working. Less emphasis is placed on analyzing the root of the problem, allowing the client to recognize strengths and resources. With this, clients are seen as experts in their own lives, allowing them to highlight their existing strengths, skills, and past successes. The therapy looks toward a preferred future, with questions often revolving around what the client wants to be different.
